FAQS
The Smith Machine Rack Attachment adds smooth, vertical guidance to your lifts—without sacrificing any power rack functionality or interfering with your existing equipment. You no longer need a costly, space-consuming, stand-alone smith machine typically found only in commercial gyms. Now you can seamlessly integrate this versatile smith machine attachment directly onto your current PR-5000 or PR-4000 power cage (80" & 93" upright height options)—providing the best all-in-one gym solution at home.
In fact, REP's Smith Machine Attachment goes above and beyond standard smith machines, with increased range of motion, three adjustable bar path angles, and more. Whether you're just starting your fitness journey or are an experienced lifter focused on muscle isolation, a home gym smith machine can provide controlled, safe, and targeted lifting—helping you build strength, improve technique, and reduce injury risk.
Product Highlights:
- •Adjustability: Customize your setup to suit your lift—choose from three angled options: –5, 0, and +5 degrees.
- •Enhanced Range of Motion: Perform exercises from the floor (e.g., Pendlay rows) to overhead movements with 19 levels of bar height adjustments for 93" racks, 16 levels for 80" racks, and low-profile safety stops that allow for a wider range of motion.
- •Smooth Performance: Premium bearings and non-metal-on-metal bar hook contact ensure smooth operation with minimal friction, scratching, or wear.
-
MODULARITY
REP leads the way with a truly modular design — a rack-attached smith machine that can be bolted inside or outside of your PR-4000 or PR-5000 rack, giving you the flexibility to configure your training space exactly how you want. Unlike bulky, standalone units, this attachment transforms your rack into an all-in-one solution, combining functionality, space savings, and cost efficiency. -
ENHANCED RANGE OF MOTION
Lift freely with confidence. Optimized guide rail height and thicker rods deliver smooth, stable travel. With 19 bar levels on 93” racks and 16 on 80” racks, REP gives you more setup options than most home gym smith machine competitors. When paired with low-profile safeties, the REP® Smith Machine Rack Attachment delivers maximum range of motion — from floor-based movements to overhead presses — helping you train deeper, safer, and more effectively. -
+5°, 0°, or -5° Angles
Fine-tune your setup with +5°, 0°, and -5° bar path options to better match your body’s natural movement patterns across different lifts. These adjustable angles help optimize form, improve muscle activation, and reduce joint strain for a more natural lifting experience. Whether you prefer a slightly forward tilt for presses, a neutral setup for squats, or a backward angle for rows, the REP® Smith Machine lets you tailor your bar path to your training goals — bringing biomechanics and performance into perfect alignment. -
NO METAL ON METAL CONTACT
Every detail is engineered for durability and performance — right down to how the bar rests. The composite-lined bar hooks eliminate metal-on-metal contact, preventing scratches, wear, and unwanted noise over time. Designed to keep your equipment performing and looking like new, rep after rep. -
WEIGHT CAPACITY
Built for strength that goes the distance. This compact smith machine attachment features a 450 lb weight capacity and robust, commercial-grade construction. A high-capacity design that performs under heavy loads — perfect for both serious home gym setups and commercial training environments. Whether you’re pushing for PRs or training clients, this smith machine is engineered to keep up with your progress for years to come. -
SMOOTH PERFORMANCE
High-quality bearings create a near-frictionless glide for every lift. Engineered for precision and consistency, a buttery-smooth bar travel enhances control, confidence, and overall training comfort. Combined with the smooth rotation of the bar, each rep feels balanced and responsive — whether you’re pressing, squatting, or isolating muscle groups. -
CHOOSE YOUR KNURL
Customize your smith machine bar grip to suit your training style, with either REP’s signature Colorado or Double Black Diamond knurling. Each option delivers a distinct feel and grip pattern inspired by our premium barbells — whether you prefer a balanced, all-purpose texture or a more aggressive grip for heavy lifts. -
15KG BAR WEIGHT
Perfect your form before piling on the plates. With a light 15kg starting weight, the REP® Smith Machine lets you focus on technique, control, and proper muscle engagement without the strain of a heavy bar. Ideal for beginners learning new movements or advanced lifters refining precision work, this lighter starting point makes setup effortless while ensuring every rep builds a stronger foundation. -
ATTACHMENT ECOSYSTEM
Prepare for an evolving workout experience. The REP® Smith Machine is more than just a standalone attachment — it’s the foundation of a growing ecosystem of future attachments designed to seamlessly integrate with your rack setup. As new accessories roll out, your smith machine will continue to expand in capability and versatility, unlocking new ways to train, customize, and optimize your workouts. Every addition will fit perfectly into REP’s modular design philosophy — giving you the best system that grows with your goals.

The smith machine attachment is compatible with REP PR-4000 and PR-5000 series racks in both 80” and 93” height options.
Yes. As long as there is no Ares 2.0, Ares 1.0, or Athena, the Smith Machine works well on a 4-post rack. Please note that crossmember length determines compatibility with other attachments. Check our configuration guide or quiz for your exact setup.
Absolutely. The smith machine integrates seamlessly into 6-post setups, offering several possible configurations.
Yes, it will. Both angled and vertical.
The smith machine will integrate into existing 6-post set-ups of the Ares 2.0, Athena, Ares 1.0. It is not compatible with existing 4-post set-ups with an Ares 2.0, Ares 1.0, or Athena. REP is working on future solutions that will allow compatibility with 4-post racks. It is not compatible with either of these wall-mounted cable systems. REP is currently working on some options for future compatibility.
Compatibility varies by configuration. Depending where the smith machine is placed, and your rack size, pull-up bar compatibility may be affected.
Yes. For this configuration, you will need the upper brackets (sold separately) as well Front Foot Extensions (FFEs). For FFEs, both the 2.0 and 1.0 variants will work. The Mini FFEs will also work, but the Smith Machine can only be angled to about 4 degrees. Note that this will not work with racks that have an Ares 2.0, Ares 1.0, or Athena as the trolleys would hit the smith machine.
Yes, as long as the smith bar placement allows sufficient clearance from stored plates. Weight storage compatibility depends on the rack depth and crossmember length.
Yes. During installation, you can choose from three angle options: –5°, 0°, or +5°, allowing you to tailor the bar path to your preferred lifting style and comfort. For some exercises, the angled bar path can help mimic natural joint motion, improving comfort and muscle activation while reducing strain on joints.
The Colorado Barbell knurl offers a medium aggressive and grippy knurling that works well for all exercises and won't tear up your hands. The Black Diamond knurl is more aggressive and is best suited for individuals that prefer deeper knurling as it will be sharper and grippier. Both options offer dual knurl markings (IWF / IPF) and a center knurl, making this smith machine suitable for all exercises.
The smith machine is rated for 450 lb max loading. The bar weight is approximately 15kg. There is no counterbalance. REP has worked to lighten the bar enough so that a counterbalance was not needed and would only increase complexity and price of the product.
Premium linear bearings and ultra-tight tolerances ensure smooth and nearly frictionless bar travel.
When installed on the inside of a 6-post rack, depending on your crossmember depth, you will be limited on the use of spotter arms or flip-down / strap-safeties inside of the rack. For a 30" rack (4-post or 6-post), with the smith mounted inside the rack, the best option would be to use Spotter Arms off the front upright. For a 41" rack (4-post or 6-post), as long as the smith machine is placed close to an upright, spotter arms will work both inside or outside the rack. In either case, when mounted inside the rack, flip-downs and strap safeties will not be compatible. The good news is that REP is currently developing a new safety option that would allow customers to place their smith machine inside the rack and still use an external safety for free barbell work.
A smith machine is good for beginners all the way to advanced athletes. Since the smith machine has a fixed bar path and integrated safeties it’s a safer training tool than a free barbell, making it great for beginners or those trading alone. For advanced individuals, the smith machine allows for increased hypertrophy as it can enable high muscle recruitment, activation and isolation, by removing the stability aspect from the exercise and really allowing the user to focus on the movement and target muscle. It also allows for a safer way to train to failure.
The smith machine Attachment installs directly onto your rack using provided hardware. No rack disassembly is required, but it may help to loosen the upper and lower crossmembers to make installation easier.
REP is currently working to develop an ecosystem of attachments that interface directly with the smith machine and allow even more functionality. The BYOB variant is still in development. This option will offer the ability to install your own barbell, speciality bar, or even operate both sides independently with ISO handles. More to come on this soon!
Yes. This will work with the 1.25” Standard, 1.25” Raw, and 2” Standard Pull-Up Bars.
For installation off the front of the rack, you will need to purchase the additional Smith upper extension brackets, as well as a lower front foot extension. The smith is compatible with the front foot extension 2.0, front food extension 1.0, as well as the mini front foot extensions. Based on which front foot extension option is used, you will need to install the upper bracket in the right orientation. Refer to the assembly guide for your FFE version to ensure the extensions face the proper direction for a front-mounted smith machine. Also, note that if you chose to use mini front foot extensions, your adjustable angle will be limited to only 4 degrees.
When your smith machine is placed as close as possible to your front update, the plates on your smith bar and cable trolleys share the same travel path. To avoid interference, move and lock both trolleys either above or below the range of motion you’ll use the smith machine for so the plates on the bar won’t contact the trolleys at any point. Before lifting, run the bar through your full ROM with plates on to confirm clearances.
