How to Pick the Best Storage for Your Home or Commercial Gym - 2024

In-rack storage

When building the perfect home or commercial gym, space is often an issue. You have to map out where to put your power rack, free weights, bench, barbells, and maybe even cable machines (if you don’t integrate them onto your power rack – which you should do). But don’t forget to plot out your storage, too.

The best storage can transform your gym – and give you somewhere to stash all those balls, bands, and dumbbells.

Here are some tips to help you pick the best storage system for your gym and how to compare the different options out there.

1. Customization

Look for storage that you can customize, so you can make it work with your personal setup. Not everyone has a full set of dumbbells (hello, adjustable dumbbell) or 10 med balls, so not every storage system works. Or maybe you want shelves you can attach right to your rack, but you also have a functional trainer attachment. The Modular Storage System allows you to build exactly the solution you need based on your individual needs and equipment.

When REP designed its Modular Storage System, the first motivation was to create components that give lifters full customizability for storage that is specific to their unique home gym.

2. Versatility

Storage that can double up and add more options to your gym is <chef’s kiss.> Pick storage with upright holes that are compatible with attachments, like band pegs or weight horns. The second goal with REP’s Modular Storage System was to design storage in a way to have options that are compatible with current and future attachments.

And look for storage with multi-purpose shelves. For example, REP’s Dumbbell and Kettlebell Shelf if flat and can be used for all kinds of equipment, including balls and small accessories. A versatile unit provides more bang for your buck (and for your space).

3. Durability

We put a lot of demands on your gym storage; it has to be able to hold All of the Heavy Things. A high weight capacity (1,000lbs or so) is a must. Skip the cheaper 2x2” 13-gauge uprights that you see in our competitors. They’re not tough enough for you. REP’s storage is made with ultra robust 3x3” 11-gauge steel. We don’t mess around.

4. Stand-Alone Options

While in-rack (also called on-rack) storage is ideal because it saves space, look for modular storage that can also exist on its own. Stand-alone options are great if you don’t have a power rack, don’t want your weights on your rack, need even more space, or just like the look of a separate unit. It’s also nice to know if you want to switch things up, you can go back and forth between in-rack and stand-alone storage using many of the same pieces.

Unfortunately, a lot of modular storage options from gym equipment companies offer one or the other: in-rack or stand-alone storage.

We pick both. Why limit yourself?

5. Easy to Install

This isn’t Ikea. Ain’t nobody got 39 hours to set up shelves. And just because you lift weights doesn’t mean you want to be hoisting unnecessarily hefty shelves high above your head while trying to attach them to your rack. Our Modular Storage System components are tough enough to handle whatever you need them to hold, but they’re accessible for anyone and easy to put together.
